Mother Bethel AME Church is the first African Methodist Episcopal congregation in America, founded in 1794. Its first pastor, elected to bishop in 1816, was Richard Allen, a minister, educator, writer, and one of America's most active and influential black leaders. It gives the following descriptive information:
The mission of Mother Bethel African Methodist Church is to receive and nurture disciples of Christ and minister to the needs of all people in word and deed. As the Mother Church of our denomination, it is our mission to preserve and present the history of Mother Bethel and the A.M.E. Church as we continue to preserve and develop African American culture.
