The Free University of Philadelphia gave the following description in 2012:

Occupy Philly Launches The Free University of Philadelphia

An exciting experiment in learning is changing lives in Philadelphia. The Free University of Philadelphia—a project of an Occupy Philly working group—already has two classes under way, and at least another three beginning in April. The Free U. is premised upon the notion that education is a human right and knowledge is freedom. We propose to hold classes from basic reading, writing, and math to advanced philosophy, science, and the arts.

Our first two classes, already under way, are "Occupy Computer Programming" and "Revolutionary Narrative: The Poetics of Power." In April, three more courses will begin: "Social Media and Citizen Journalism: Ethics and Application," "Writing about Music, Videos, and Movies," and "Unfinished Revolution: A Comparative History of the American Revolution and the Occupy Movement." Classes are being held at locations across Philadelphia, including at Free Library branches.

The Free University Working Group actively seeks volunteers to facilitate classes on any topic. We intend to grow. Students/participants are welcome to attend all classes, without paying a dime. Anyone is welcome to join the Working Group and help direct the course of the organization. The Free University of Philadelphia continues the long and ongoing tradition of education as liberation.
