'''About:'''

There’s a growing awareness in our society that much of what gives meaning to our lives is our engagement in, and support from, our communities.

Lotsa Helping Hands was created in response to this desire for more meaningful civic engagement. In our demanding, technologically advanced and constantly changing world, we have sometimes diminished the role that community has always played in the human spirit. Yet today, many are waking up to this absence and re-energizing their commitment to “community,” learning more about the role they can play to enhance it—whether “community” refers to their close family and friends, their schools or their local neighborhood or town. Lotsa Helping Hands provides a platform for this awakening; using the tools of the virtual world to enrich the lives we share with our families, friends, neighbors and colleagues.

'''How We Achieve Our Vision:<br>'''

We use technology to bring people together—to help people who are experiencing the challenges of caring for someone in crisis or over a long-term period. They may have difficulty asking for help. Or they may be overwhelmed with offers of help, with requests for update requests or returning phone calls. Conversely, family members, friends, neighbors and colleagues want to do something, but they aren’t sure what they can do or how they can best lend a hand.

We help caregivers by giving their “circles of community” a way to help. Friends, neighbors, and colleagues can create a free Community web site to help manage the daily tasks that become a challenge during times of need and keep everyone up to date on what’s happening.

'''A Personal Beginning:'''<br>

Lotsa Helping Hands was founded out of a personal family caregiving experience. When Barry Katz’s wife Carole was diagnosed with ovarian cancer, he was overwhelmed with offers of help. When Carole lost her battle with cancer, he and his best friend Hal Chapel founded Lotsa Helping Hands to help family caregivers in similar situations.

<br>The service was created with a real-life understanding of how to bring together a variety of social circles and what the resulting group as a whole might need. Today, we have more than 750,000 members who have participated in Lotsa Helping Hands communities.

'''We Believe In:<br>'''

•Providing a service that is and always will be free to our members<br>•Delivering a service that is simple to use—no special knowledge or training required! (But we offer free webinars) <br>•Protecting the privacy and security of every Community and every member<br>•Keeping in touch with you to hear your feedback and stories<br>

'''About:'''

'''The mission of “University City Off the Grid”:'''

To catalyze a model sustainable community in University City by helping residents, businesses, and institutions reduce their use of limited resources. Our goal is to partner with others to foster a community where today’s actions do not negatively affect the next generation‘s ability to meet its needs.

To bring this mission to fruition, University City District regularly convenes stakeholders and partners through a Sustainability Steering Committee to coordinate, call attention to, and strategize around our collective efforts. Those efforts are guided by the framework established by Mayor Nutter’s Greenworks Agenda to develop and meet community-wide goals and aspirations in making Philadelphia the greenest city in America. To accomplish this, we are building on the incredible sustainability work that has been underway for years by community residents, businesses, and institutions.

UCD is also taking an active role itself in promoting sustainability through a number of new and ongoing projects.

Those include:

•The 40th Street Sustainability Smackdown. UCD will be working with the University of Pennsylvania to assist businesses with energy efficiency improvements that reduce consumption and save money. These efforts will be replicated on UCD’s commercial corridors.<br>•Sustainability workshops focused on measures that residents and businesses can take to reduce their environmental footprint. These include topics like energy efficiency for homes and businesses, installing green roofs, and composting.<br>•A new website, http://ucityoffthegrid.com/, that focuses on exciting new sustainability developments in University City, and will become a one stop shop for information about new programs and resources that can help University City residents make smart environmental decisions.<br>•Promoting transit use. Through a partnership with SEPTA, UCD provides easily accessible ground transportation for major employment destinations in University City on the LUCY bus.<br>•Increasing recycling. UCD distributes recycling bins and will soon be giving out the stickers that allow residents to participate in the city’s new Recycling Rewards program to incentivize residents to divert their waste from landfills.<br>•Provide parking for bicycles and scooters. UCD has installed over 100 bike racks throughout University City and continually looks for additional opportunities for installation.<br>•Creating green streets by constructing rain gardens, greening traffic islands, planting trees, and installing sidewalk planters.<br>•Composting the leaves that are collected each fall by residents and UCD. UCD is working with Fairmount Park and The Streets Department to make sure that our neighborhood’s leaves are recycled into valuable compost, instead of filling our landfills.<br>•Making compost and mulch available to community gardens in University City. UCD is promoting access to local healthy food by helping community gardens get easy access to these key ingredients of a successful garden.<br>•Sponsoring a new Farmers Market at 40th &amp; Walnut St. UCD will be partnering with The Food Trust to bring a new weekly farmers market to this busy corner along with the popular farmers market at Clark Park.<br>•Cultivating the potential for training local youth and adults in the skills required to foster a sustainable community. UCD endeavors to do this by building on its fledgling West Philadelphia Skills Initiative – a broad effort to connect neighborhood residents to jobs at University City’s academic and medical institutions.<br>•Making University City more walkable by installing new pedestrian lights and bumpouts along the Market Street corridor<br>•Improving usage of area parks by providing ongoing park maintenance.
If you desire guidance with college and/or career options or a little extra motivation to keep after your dream, you should pick up a copy.

<br>

'''Where can I get a copy?'''

=== About us: ===

The Philadelphia Gay News is the area’s largest and oldest publication targeted to the lesbian, gay, bisexual and transgender community. Started in 1975, we strive to focus on and promote businesses and populations within our community to engender mutual success. This includes publishing special issues to highlight areas such as marriage, pets and health, as well as tackling sensitive issues like LGBT suicide and homelessness.

As a community newspaper, PGN’s mission is to be a platform for the LGBT community to communicate with each other on all their various viewpoints, as well as to communicate with the mainstream/ally community. We promote the community within and without. To be that platform, PGN reaches out to, builds rapport with and listens to its readers and supporters — and its critics. We strive to make the LGBT community more informed about resources in the community and to educate the non-gay community on who we are. Like any group, the LGBT community needs a communications tool to keep abreast of areas of concern, such as health issues and legislation, and to celebrate our successes.

Founded in 1824 in Philadelphia, the Historical Society of Pennsylvania is one of the oldest historical societies in the United States and holds many national treasures. The society's building, designed by Addison Hutton and listed on the City of Philadelphia's Register of Historical Places, houses some 600,000 printed items and over 19 million manuscript and graphic items.

The society is one of the largest family history libraries in the nation, has preeminent printed collections on Pennsylvania and regional history, and offers superb manuscript collections renowned for their strength in 17th-, 18th-, and 19th-century history. With the addition of the holdings of The Balch Institute for Ethnic Studies in 2002 (and those of The Genealogical Society of Pennsylvania in 2006 through a Strategic Alliance Agreement), the society has become a chief center for the documentation and study of the ethnic communities and immigrant experiences shared by people whose American history began more recently-between the late 19th century century and our own times. In 2009 HSP formally transferred ownership of its museum collection to the Atwater Kent Museum of Philadelphia.

Together these holdings, old and new, make the society one of the nation's most important special collections libraries--a center of historical documentation and study, education, and engagement.<br>Contact us:
University City was Philadelphia's first suburb, and it remains home to distinctive, livable urban neighborhoods of wide porches, tree-lined streets, restaurants and cafes, and shops. World-renowned centers of education, medicine, and technology and residents of diverse backgrounds lend University City its intellectual and international flavor. Our galleries, museums, and theaters feature exhibitions and performances from across the nation and around the world. Although the six colleges and universities located here earned the area the "University City" name, just like all cities, University City hums 365 days of the year.
University City boundaries are, on the east, 29th Street and the Schuylkill River; on the west, 50th Street; on the north, Spring Garden Street (to 40th Street), Powelton Avenue (to 44th Street), and Market Street; and on the south, Civic Center Boulevard, University Avenue and Woodland Avenue.
With its funky vibe and unique spirit, University City is one of Philadelphia's most vibrant and diverse neighborhoods. Children’s Literacy Initiative (CLI) is a non-profit that works with teachers to transform instruction so that children can become powerful readers, writers, and thinkers.

Our goal is to close the gap in literacy achievement between disadvantaged children and their more affluent peers. We know that early reading = lifelong success. We also know that there is no stronger lever for improving student outcomes than giving teachers high-impact instructional strategies.

<br>

Over the past 10 years, teachers coached by CLI have taught more than one million children.
=== About ===

Welcome to the Institute for Community Justice! We are a Philadelphia-based initiative committed to community justice: the community-inspired, community-led solutions for healing in a time of mass imprisonment.

The Institute for Community Justice was founded as part of Philadelphia FIGHT’s commitment to reduce not only the number of people in prison living with HIV, but also the lasting effects of mass imprisonment on communities most affected.

=== What We Know: ===

We know that two-thirds of people will be arrested within three years of their release from prison. This statistic has driven a national and local focus on reentry programs to address the barriers people face after imprisonment. What has been less emphasized is the one-third of people who are not rearrested after their release. Who are they? In our experience, they are community leaders who have set their hands to changing the systems they once found inescapable, and to rebuilding their communities so that the next generation might be able to imagine a future beyond mass imprisonment.

By centering the wisdom and experiences of formerly imprisoned community leaders, the Institute for Community Justice works to amplify existing efforts to build safe and vibrant communities, push for needed policy change, and realize our vision for community-led transformative justice.

=== Our work is organized around three core projects: ===

=== 1. TEACH Inside/TEACH Outside ===

The founding vision of TEACH Inside/TEACH Outside (TITO) is that we can change this. TITO is designed not only to reduce individuals’ risk of contracting HIV, but also to transform the structures that increase community-level vulnerability to HIV and imprisonment.

<br>

=== 2. Support Center for Prison Advocacy ===

United around the slogan ‘Community Organizing is a Reentry Program,’ the Support Center for Prison Advocacy (SCPA) was founded to build the leadership of people who are formerly imprisoned and their families in organizing their own neighborhood communities. With Neighborhood Networks already underway in North, South and West Philadelphia, the SCPA aims to create a city-wide resource center without walls.

<br>

=== 3. Prison Health News ===

Founded in 2001, Prison Health News is a quarterly newsletter written by and for people who have been in prison or are currently living behind the walls. Spanning topics on medical updates, health care advocacy and mutual support, Prison Health News works to build community across the prison walls that divide us.

Prison Health News is a project of Reaching Out: A Support Group with Action and the Institute for Community Justice. Each issue is produced by a Philadelphia-based collective of writers and editors, most of whom have been in prison and are living with HIV, and includes the work of imprisoned artists and writers. We also collaborate with the Philadelphia FIGHT AIDS Library to answer the many letters to us from people in prisons and jails asking for resources and health information.

Our readers are living inside a system that denies them prevention tools and treatment information about HIV, hepatitis, and other health issues. They are dealing with medical neglect, daily humiliations driven by intense stigma, and the destruction of their communities by mass imprisonment.

At our Reentry Organizing Center, formerly imprisoned city residents can connect with these projects, and work personally with the Institute mentoring team to promote their own self care, political engagement and mutual empowerment.

=== Mission Statement ===

Over the past 10 years, teachers coached by CLI have taught more than one million children.
