UWSEPA kicks off 2011 free tax preparation campaign

United Way of Southeastern Pennsylvania will kick off its 2011 volunteer income tax preparation initiative with a special event on Tuesday, January 25th from 11am to 3pm at the United Way headquarters, 1709 Benjamin Franklin Parkway in Philadelphia.
During those hours, families earning less than $50,000 (and individuals earning less than $20,000) can get free assistance in filing their 2010 tax returns with the help of an IRS-certified volunteer tax preparer.
Also, for the third straight year, <http://walmartstores.com/communitygiving/203.aspx>The Walmart Foundation, <http://www.unitedway.org/worldwide/>United Way Worldwide, <http://www.thebeehive.org/>One Economy’s Beehive.org and the <http://www.realeconomicimpact.org/>National Disability Institute have partnered to bring free tax preparation and filing services to consumers nationwide. Taxpayers earning less than $57,000 per year can file their state and feder<http://www.myfreetaxes.com/philly> al taxes for free online at the partnership’s <http://www.myfreetaxes.com/philly>MyFreeTaxes.com website.
The website is a one-stop place to find out about everything you need to know about filing tax returns.  In addition to tools for filing online or finding in-person volunteer help in your own neighborhood, the site also offers a Make It Easy Toolbox to help taxpayers understand and apply for common <http://www.thebeehive.org/money/pay-taxes/income-basics-credits-deductions-and-witholding/common-tax-credits/tax-credits-households-children>tax credits for households with children, <http://www.thebeehive.org/money/pay-taxes/income-basics-credits-deductions-and-witholding/common-tax-credits/tax-credits-working-people>working people, <http://www.thebeehive.org/money/pay-taxes/income-basics-credits-deductions-and-witholding/common-tax-deductions/tax-deductions-students>students, and <http://www.thebeehive.org/money/pay-taxes/income-basics-credits-deductions-and-witholding/common-tax-deductions>many others.
UWSEPA’s campaign targets taxpayers eligible for the Earned Income Tax Credit, which has been called America’s largest anti-poverty program. A refundable tax credit for low to moderate-income working individuals, the EITC can increase a family’s annual income by over $5,000. The EITC reduces the tax burden on workers, supplements their wages, and helps families pay bills or save for the future.
Unfortunately, every year millions of dollars in tax refunds go unclaimed in Southeastern Pennsylvania. In Philadelphia alone, an estimated 39,000 eligible households do not file EITC claims, leaving approximately $66.3 million in unclaimed credits.
Tax Services will begin at noon.
