Founded by John E. Allen, Jr. in 1966, Freedom Theatre is Pennsylvania's oldest African-American theatre. In 1968 Robert E. Leslie joined Freedom Theatre and founded the Performing Arts Training Program in 1971. After John E. Allen, Jr.'s death in 1992, nationally acclaimed director Walter Dallas became Freedom's Artistic Director.
Today, Freedom Theatre consists of two components: the Barrymore Award-winning Performing Arts Training Program, (Patricia Scott Hobbs, Director) and Facilities Rental (Gail Leslie, Director). These components work hand-in-hand to provide training in the performing arts and comprehensive customer service and community access.

Facility Rentals

Host your next special event at Freedom Theatre.

Conveniently located on the Avenue of the Arts North, near Temple University and next door to the legendary Blue Horizon, Freedom Theatre is a beautiful, historically certified facility that has many spaces available for your special occasion. The 60,000 square foot facility contains both large and intimate spaces including small classrooms, meeting rooms, a large party/reception room with kitchen, a beautiful private reception lobby (formerly the double fire-placed parlor of Shakespearean actor Edwin Forrest) and the 299-seat state-of-the-art John E. Allen, Jr. Theatre. Freedom is probably the only theatre in Philadelphia to offer free off-street parking! The Septa "C" bus stops right at our door, and the Broad Street subway stops at Girard Avenue, a short two-block walk. We couldn't be more conveniently located! Whether a wedding reception, film screening, a family reunion, corporate convention, community meeting or a performance requiring a large professional stage, Freedom Theatre is the perfect choice for your event!
