Transition Philadelphia is a group of Philadelphia citizens who are working together to prepare our city for a better future. We envision neighborhoods where:

· Energy efficient homes take less money to heat and cool.
· More of our food is produced in the city or nearby.
· We celebrate our heritage of walkable neighborhoods, good public transportation, and biking.
· We are healthier and more prepared to care for ourselves.
· Our education system gives our young people the skills to meet the challenges ahead of them.

Working together as neighbors, we can achieve these goals. At Transition Philadelphia we are working to improve our community by reducing our dependence on oil, coal and natural gas. This change will decrease our carbon emissions while making us less susceptible to peak oil, climate instability and the resulting economic shocks.

We believe that our current economic system, which pushes us to consume and spend, has not made us happier, healthier, or more secure. We are working longer hours than ever before and have little time to enjoy our friends or family. We can increase our happiness, health, and well being by making purchases more strategically. Buying food to share with friends at home can save on dining expenses while building better friendships. Biking to work, can get you in shape and save the expense and hassle of parking, buying gas, and maintaining a vehicle. We believe the personal relationships we have are more important than the things we own.

The threats of rising prices, long-term job losses, global climate change, and peak oil are huge challenges. We don’t know exactly how these challenges will affect us in the coming years and decades. But, we do know that meeting our basic needs with less energy will make our community more secure, comfortable and resilient in the face of whatever lies ahead.
