This Wikidelphia resource page gives you a few suggestions to get started volunteering in Philadelphia:

A local "umbrella" organization for recruiting and coordinating volunteers is United Way of Greater Philadelphia and Southern New Jersey.

The website Volunteer Match Volunteer Match is used by many Philadelphia nonprofits to make announcements, so it's an essential visit for a volunteer in search of a great gig in Philly. It is not as good for South Jersey; we hope more South Jersey groups will start posting. For your convenience in seeing a good example of Volunteer Match, here's a link to get a snapshot of opportunities in the central Philadelphia area and outward: volunteermatch.org/search?l=19102.

The City, through the Mayor's Office of Engagement and Volunteer Service, runs a search engine for volunteers. See SERVE Philadelphia.

Idealist idealist.org also posts searchable opportunities for volunteers, as does All For Good allforgood.org/volunteers.

Yet another database of volunteer opportunities is found at 2-1-1 SEPA: Give Help: Volunteer.

Craigslist is a less organized, occasionally useful engine:
