Agenda Items for December's Meeting
P's Agenda
- Reports (see below).
- To S:
- How's it going with making us mobile-optimized?
- Any progress on making crowd-sourcing a reality?
- I still want to make Where refer to location. Other than CDCs and RCOs, very few orgs specify a service area, so I've had nearly zero use for Where, which bothers me a lot due to all the beautiful work I did making a geographic infrastructure, while also having our "consultant" say that it's one of the most user-friendly features we have.
- Our "consultant" also strongly recommends standardizing the page format. All I need is permission to apply my current standard on every page that needs an update.
- Update and improve the Action Items sections (farther below).
Report
- Main Page:
- Let's look at the new Tips box on the Main Page. And the All Tips page. (Done.)
- Note "newest page", "latest full update" and "newest stub". (Done.)
- Also re the very important up-to-dateness issue, I've done more main-link checking in November than usual. Checking and maybe replacing the Main Link is just a "lick and a promise", but at least it enables our visitors to go get current information at the subject's site. (Done.)
- Other, small changes have been made to make the page look better organized. (Done.)
- Please let's go over the To ON page and give me permission and access to move 'em.
- Filling the page was not a big project. I added items as I found them in the course of checking pages' main links for update needs, which I've been doing more, due to our "consultant"'s highlighting of how important it is to keep a website up-to-date. (All I do is replace main links or mark Is-Past. I SHOULD do MORE than just update the main links.
- I attempted to open a Facebook account, which was immediately disabled due to "violation" of "community standards". I HAD NOT POSTED ANYTHING. As for other social media sites: Instagram is the same as Facebook. Bluesky doesn't have enough active users to make it worth my time. So I guess that's it for other social media accounts.
- I also posted this about it on X: "For many years, I've refused to have a Facebook account due to its serious privacy problems. Last month, I started an account for Wikidelphia. But the Face-bot disabled the account before I even posted anything! I know of nothing I can do about it." This post got a lot of Views, such that it's the most popular post in months!
- I've decided that I don't need to "Look into Broken Link Checker or something else." I already find lots of broken links just in the course of normal work.
To Do: JPS
- Do the updates on the list Ted sent me. (Received November 17.)
- Attend a WikiSalon meeting with the goal to "Get wikidelphia into wikipedia via wikisalon.", i.e., "Re: how to get a mention on Wikipedia". (Sat Dec 13.1200-1400)
- Make a template showing my standard layout. (In Progress)
Ongoing
- Build out the "neighborhood pages with embedded maps" which are "visually useful" and "highly informative and user-friendly".
- Add more pictures.
- Take every opportunity to add a See Also link, which "enhances discoverability".
- Keep building Category Checklist.
To Do: SRP
- Do research into mobile-optimization (which would greatly benefit ON, too).
- Start finding other local wikis and get tips on volunteer-editor recruiting and on how to measure usage.

To Consider Doing
New Ideas
- Make the Main Page search box a lot more prominent.
- Make it bigger (wider and taller); maybe move it to a different position.
Top Priority
- Site Design
- Correct the "critical flaw" that "the site is not optimized for mobile devices."
- Modernize the whole site's "outdated design".
- Make the site more visually engaging.
- Correct the "absence of standardized [page layout] templates" which leads to inconsistent information and inconsistent branding. ... Standardize page templates to include essential fields".
- Scope
- Stop adding national/global pages. Having them "dilutes [our] Philadelphia-specific mission. ... [M]aintaining a broad scope is unsustainable." "Wikidelphia should focus exclusively on the Greater Philadelphia region (Philadelphia and its surrounding counties, e.g., Montgomery, Delaware, Bucks). ... Limit content to Philadelphia and surrounding counties to maintain relevance and manageability."
- "Move non-Philadelphia pages to OtherNetworks.org to streamline Wikidelphia's mission." "Migrate these pages to ON:
- "Pages on national/global organizations or digital alternatives (e.g., “Other Networks” content).
- "Pages on non-Philadelphia-specific advocacy or issues (e.g., global human rights, environmental initiatives not tied to Philly)."
- Other
- Drum up an actual volunteer community.
Other
- User-Friendliness
- Since the Where-Philadelphia infrastructure is considered "highly user-friendly" and "intuitive", make "Where" refer to physical location so that more pages can be attached to the structure.
- Devise and implement "tooltips" and "onboarding guidance" to help users navigate the WCS's complex, "multi-dimensional structure".
- Learn about accessibility standards, such as screen reader compatibility or high-contrast modes, and implement some.
- Up-To-Dateness
- "Add a visible 'Last Updated' timestamp [as on every page of SGOL.org] to each page to signal content freshness."
- "Add a prominent 'Report Outdated Content' button on each page, allowing users to flag stale information for the staff editor to prioritize."
- Focus updates on high-traffic pages [if we can find out which pages get high traffic].
- "Use a free tool (e.g., Broken Link Checker) to identify and flag dead links for the staff editor to fix."
- Categories
- Explain categories more clearly. "The multi-dimensional structure (e.g., 3,000 categories for 2,553 pages) can confuse users without clear guidance."
- Give the WCS a "visual hierarchy (e.g., collapsible menus, sidebar navigation)" or a "user-friendly interface (e.g., filters like Yelp).
- Correct this: "Long lists of categories at the bottom of pages can overwhelm users; consider collapsible menus or a sidebar."
- "Category Wizard Tool: Develop a simple form or checklist for editors to select all relevant categories when creating/editing pages, ensuring consistency without manual expertise."
- Find a way to apply categories more consistently.
- "Category Explanations: Add brief descriptions or tooltips for each Top Level Category on the main WCS page to clarify their purpose."
- "Automate Category Suggestions: Use basic AI or keyword analysis to suggest relevant categories based on page content, reducing editor workload."
- Other
- Correct "varying heading styles".
- Open an Instagram account.
- "Introduce a 'Sponsor a Neighborhood' program, where local businesses or organizations fund specific neighborhood pages in exchange for subtle branding (e.g., a logo at the bottom)."
Mobile Optimization
Browser Comparison Browser (Market Share) Wrap on Zooming Pre-Wrapped Menu Smaller Safari (53%-55%) No ? ? Chrome (41%-45%) No Yes A Lot Firefox (2%-3%) No Yes A Lot Opera (1%-1.5%) Yes Yes but Tiny A Little
Key
- Market Share: I asked Grok AI to rank the browsers in order by how many people use them. Safari and Chrome dominate.
- Wrap on Zooming: After you open the page, you zoom in to make the type bigger, but the lines don't wrap around, so you see bigger letters but the lines extend unreadably offscreen.
- Pre-Wrapped: When you open the page, the print is already larger, with the words wrapped. The text is completely readable. (But it may or may not wrap again when you zoom in or out.)
- Menu Smaller: When the body text is readable, the menu items on the left are smaller. If they're "A Lot" smaller, they're tiny and unreadable.
