Food Connect
Food Connect introduces itself with the line, "Bridging the Gap Between Surplus FOod and Hunger", and gives the following descriptive information:
ood Connect was launched as Operation Food Rescue during the 2016 Democratic National Convention in Philadelphia and was a collaborative effort by the city’s leading anti-hunger organizations, including the Mayor’s Office of Community Empowerment and Opportunity, Philabundance, the Greater Philadelphia Coalition Against Hunger, the Philadelphia Food Policy Advisory Council and Share Food Program. During the convention, 11,239 pounds of food, enough for 9,366 meals, was rescued.
According to Philabundance, there are more than 500 food pantries and soup kitchens in Philadelphia. In a 2015 study of 200 of them, nearly 90% either ran out of food or had to provide less to those in need at some point during the year. Food Connect bridges the gap between surplus food and hunger by transporting excess food from large events and from restaurants in Philadelphia to area food banks, pantries and emergency meal providers.
