After School Activities Partnerships (ASAP)
ASAP maintains a citywide directory of after school enrichment and recreation programs in Philadelphia, featuring more than 1,000 entries, which is published each fall in the Philadelphia Daily News. It is updated throughout the year and is available as a searchable document on our website. Information provided is subject to change.
In an open letter on its site, ASAP says:
As Philadelphia continues to experience staggering crime rates and the highest poverty of the nation’s ten largest municipalities, families have fewer resources to keep their children safe and stimulated after school. As a result, an estimated 45,000 kids citywide spend between 20-25 hours a week alone after school between 3pm and 6pm, the most dangerous time of day for youth according to the Police Department. Recent announcements of school closings and grim financial prospects for the Philadelphia School District makes ASAP’s work all the more important to increase the number of after school activities that complement classroom learning and to connect parents, youth and caregivers with extended day programs and after school resources throughout the city.
To this end, we are most appreciative of the work and hours of our club leaders and coaches, of the organizations that house the activities we facilitate, and of the financial support that will help us meet these challenges and any new challenges that may arise. Whether chess, debate, drama or Scrabble, all shown by research to increase academic achievement, we know we are helping young people grow intellectually and socially and are grateful for the assistance and encouragement that will enable us to continue to broaden horizons for our city’s youth.
