| Junior Barber Academy
| |
| Junior Barber Academy (JBA) is a year-round program geared to youth ages 7 through 21. JBA is currently located at 2213 N. Uber street. The 4-week program teaches participants the history of the barbering profession, the tools used to cut hair, cutting/styling hair, and the business of running a barbershop. The things participants learn in a JBA can be a catalyst to developing a lucrative career as a barber. To enrich the program experience JBA invites members to take part in workshops as well as host guest speakers from the community to elaborate on the barbering profession. JBA utilizes a curriculum designed by professional barbers and teachers. During the 3 hour session participants view a powerpoint, complete activities, have a snack, and engage in hands on practice time. With small class sizes members receive a lot of attention in root to mastery of the craft. In addition to teaching youth a skill that they can make money from for a lifetime Junior Barber Academy links youth with mentors to guide them through their professional and social growth. | |
| Activation Junior Barber Academy has a close relationship with local schools such as George Carver Engineering and Science, Strawberry Mansion High School, KIPP Philadelphia, Dobbins, Ethel Allen and recreation centers in the 19132 area. Participants in the program take part in events that serve the community like free haircuts for holidays, haircuts for the homeless, and back to school. JBA advertises through the schools and provide discount programming to students within the North Philadelphia area. Through successful programming sessions JBA has built a strong following on social media acquiring over thirty thousand followers and various press releases. JBA hosts several free information sessions to inform parents and future participants of the program. During these information sessions founder P. Michael does a demonstration of what the members of Junior Barber Academy will learn.

| Safety Workforce demographics have made progressive strides over the years. From the 60s to now women have increased 50 percent in the labor force. Today 76 percent of women with school age children are working. This is a positive economic change, but increases unsupervised time for youths. Which is apparent when considering the majority of juvenile crime occurs predominantly during the week versus the weekend. Between the hours of 3pm and 7pm children are more likely to engage in crime or be a victim of crime. Studies on active, structured recreation focused on youth have shown strong relationships to positive outcomes. Youths who participate in extracurricular activities are more likely than non-participants to have higher self-esteem, greater academic achievement and lower incidences of delinquency. Furthermore, at-risk youths have been found to especially benefit from guided recreation programming. Low-income, at-risk youth experience improved test scores in both reading and math after they begin participation in after-school programs. Data has also shown that students who reported spending no time in after school extracurricular activities were 57 percent more likely to drop out of high school, 49 percent more likely to use drugs and 27 percent more likely to have been arrested than students who spend as much as four hours in structured activities.

| Junior Barber Academy acts as a safe haven in the community for its participants, by providing mentorship to youth from successful citizens in the community. Safety is one of JBA’s top concerns which is why we work closely with local police districts through sponsorship and community workshops where officers are allowed to build relationships with youth and combat stigmas. This gives the surrounding communities a sense of freedom and safety now that they can put a face to the officers that protect and serve their neighborhood.

| Community Engagement Community Engagement is a key component of Junior Barber Academy. Participants in the program engage 50 to 200 community members by providing free haircuts. Partakers in the program gain crucial communication skills conversing with clientele and building relationships with members of their community who otherwise would have been strangers. Junior Barber Academy has a close partnership with YES (Youth Emergency Services) which allows members of JBA to get practice hours on youth and young adults who are experiencing homelessness or temporary displacement. JBA members have a sense of ownership of their community by immediately putting a smile on someone’s face after a haircut.

| Junior Barber Academy has built strong relationships with surrounding schools where we advertise the program. JBA offers youth a trade that makes them money and ongoing incentives for their hard work. The program is welcoming for all members of the community, you could get a free haircut, volunteer as a guest speaker, participate in events to give back to the community or run a workshop. JBA supports diverse cultures by being non discriminatory in its practices, anyone could get a haircut.

| Collaborative Opportunity Throughout the development and process of Junior Barber Academy members of the community have donated time and money to cultivate the program. JBA works hand and hand with volunteers and businesses to provide a quality experience for the youth in the community. Some of our key partnerships are as follows:

Born in and raised in North Philadelphia, P has over two decades of experience in the barbering industry that has evolved to a grooming care business and the creation of several products.
