Independence Public Media of Philadelphia, Inc. was founded in 1981 and has been developing a fresh approach to public media ever since.

Independence Public Media Foundation is currently continuing its transition from a public broadcaster to a foundation. The organization grew out of Independence Public Media of Philadelphia, Inc., a public broadcaster that operated WYBE Channel 35 in the Philadelphia market. Independence Media relinquished its broadcast license in 2017 as part of the FCC Broadcast Incentive Auction and received a one-time payment of $131.5 million.
