Read by 4th
Read by 4th gives the following descriptive information:
We are a citywide coalition of community members and partners managed by the Free Library of Philadelphia. We’re bringing together parents, relatives, neighbors, teachers, researchers, pediatricians, community organizers, faith leaders, overseers of parks and rec centers, neighborhood shop owners, grocers, launderers, barbers, stylists — virtually anyone who cares about, and can connect with, children and their families.
Right now, two out of three Philadelphia schoolchildren enter the 4th grade unable to read at grade level. This means that every day, 127 school buses’ worth of 3rd graders are showing up to school not ready to learn. Read by 4th is dedicated to changing this.
Our goal is to more than double the number of 4th graders reading at grade level by 2020.
This is, however, just a waypoint to our eventual goal of giving every one of our children the chance to succeed — something we know is within our reach if we continue to come together as a community.
