WPPM 106.5 gives the following descriptive information:

Support WPPM 106.5 FM and help us launch our community radio station featuring local music and local news from community producers!!

Over the past 3 decades, local media activists fought and won a long, hard battle to bring cable access TV to Philadelphia. With victory came the creation of Philadelphia Community Access Media (PhillyCAM); a vibrant, bustling space where community members can gain access to the tools, education and platform they need to bring their visions and ideas to the Philly cable TV audience.
<btr>Now it’s time for PhillyCAM to take the next step towards becoming a true catalyst for people-powered media across platforms - the creation of PhillyCAM radio, a community station that will broadcast as WPPM-LP on 106.5 FM in Philadelphia and Camden. With 90 watts of power, a 5-mile broadcast range, and a transmitter located in Center City, WPPM-LP will reach over 800,000 people who live and work in its signal area, as well as a nearly limitless audience online. Going out over the airwaves means that anyone with a radio can hear what PhillyCAM radio programmers have to say, for free.

The same basic principles that have guided PhillyCAM TV for the last 7 years will now be extended to the radio station. Our doors are open to anyone who wants to create programming that can’t be heard on commercial or even traditional public radio. Already, over a hundred volunteers have gotten involved in PhillyCAM radio, and they bring with them ideas for music, news, public affairs, educational and cultural programming that gives a voice to people and groups who are not typically heard from in the media.

Some planned features of the station include:

  • A focus on local music: There are several local music shows in the works, and the framework is being built for an online and physical local music archive that will be a resource for producers and the public alike.
  • A focus on local news: Shows about local news, alternative media and local government that will collaborate with and build upon PhillyCAM TV’s already great local news coverage.
  • A focus on live music: In studio performances by local and national musicians, which will also be filmed and played on PhillyCAM TV.
  • Most importantly, a station that is created BY YOU and FOR YOU. Philadelphia, this is your radio station. Anyone can get involved and help to create what Philly hears on 106.5 FM!
